Vertical Farm example

Who ever said that growing fruits and vegetables is not possible in urban areas? And I mean in cities where we only see countless skyscrapers instead of vast green planes.
Dr. Dickson Despommier, a professor at Columbia University, also thinks it is very possible. His pet project “vertical farm” could be a great answer to having fresh farm produce in the city! This concept came out when he and his students studied the interaction of environment and human health. Dr. Despommier’s concept also caught the interest of architects in the US and Europe.

With the “vertical farm” concept, a “food farm” could fit right into the heart of New York City! Just imagine a skyscraper filled with growing and healthy fruits and vegetables. such plan is in the works and Mr. Scott Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, is serious about this plan and is going to present a feasibility study to the mayor in the following months.
The prototype would be a 30-story building that needs $20 million to $30 million budget. But according to Dr. Despommier this farm in the city could feed 50,000 people.

Well, what do you think of a “vertical farm” in the city? Is it a good idea or not?

It's certainly an interesting idea....I'd like to see some more info though. What are your sources?
