Turkish Drama: What’s the Hype?!

Noor TV Series

I’ve recently seen an increase in the attention being paid by Arab viewers and even TV stations to series and movies that originate from Turkey! This obviously includes ‘Noor’ and the upcoming movie ‘Aby Wa Ebny’ (My Father and My Son) which Topa Boyokostn will star in. I cannot help but wonder if this attention is positive or negative. As one of the stars of ‘Noor’ said presenting Turkish series in the Arab world is building a bridge between two cultures that are seemingly separated. But is this bridge feeding the Arab youth ‘bad’ information?

I mean it appears to me –a third part observer who has visited Turkey- that the country is becoming more and more ‘European’ and even when I curiously watched an episode of ‘Noor’ this became very apparent. Obviously the viewer is the arbiter in this situation but I personally think that the Turkish series are nothing special and I really do not see what all the hype is about!

Its a very normal thing before about ten years all arab people watched the Mexican series after two or three series they start boring from this drama. I think we can't love more than 30 eps. series for long time.

we just now looking for the turkish culture after that every thing will be normal and we'll back to the arabic series.

Its one of my favourite TV show and I think Turkey or Turkish drama to precise can be the missing link between both the Arab and European culture.
I still think that the TV series shows a bit of what left of Muslim or Arabian traditions regardless some unpleasnt or unwanted scences put to convay the dramatic plot of the show. Otherwise the TV show is a huge success and we should not underestimate the judgement our viewers

Noor is over-rated but it's a good show, but I think everyone is more facinated by the main actor 'Mohanad' or watever his name is becuz hes a model and the arabs are like WOW hes HOT :s

Basically the khaleeji and Eygptian series are becoming VERY repetitive. The turkish series are very original ideas conveying intriguing story lines which are so random that it captivates the viewers. I personally NEVER watch arabic satalite channels apart from the arabic music channels but guess what...'Sanatwat Al-thaya3' aired on MBC is sooooooooo AMAZING, i cannot believe im hooked.

  1. IHLURLMAR ALTINDA ROCKS ! | June 8, 2008 10:20 AM

Turkish Problems are better then other series and Ihlurlmar Altinda is very popular and TUBA BUKUYUSTUN or some thing plays in it too . But Gumus (noor) Is alright as you can see ANOTHER MODEL PLAYS IN IT !

But i suppose you don't realise how many people watch it and i knew this was gonna come up in waleg I LUV IHLURLMAR ALTINDA ! And if you like the song that pops up each time or at the beginning i have the whole album on my pc if you want it just go to youtube type the serie in and you'd probably see some thing saying Intizar------ Ihlurlmar Altinda and yes there are A MILLION DASHES ON IT ! lol Anyways I think they are great in my opinion it's better then arabic series - THIS SERIE HAS A MEANING DUDE ! :S

     IHLURLMAR ALTINDA ROCKS !

The Turkish Dramas give us a break from the boring outlines and plots of Egyptian dramas .(Although Syrian Dramas are amazing as well). And don't forget that the both dramas, Sanwat Al Dya3, and Nour are dubbed in the Syrian Accent, which gives the shows a little personality. Like imagine having them in formal arabic, I don't think the same effect would be had on the viewers. Let's thank all the Syrian Actors that contributed their voices! Both dramas are amazing, but Sanwat al Dya3, or Ihlamurlar Altinda in Turksh, is the best one out of the two! There's action, and there's an actual meaning to the story. It's so sad how Rafeef dies though! I cried, and her daughter is soo cute, and Omer is stupid cuz he treats his daughter like crap! In America, I think we're behind by like 10 or so episodes than in the arab world. So when i go there I'm going to be clueless about what happened.

Now here is an article worth talking about:

"I’ve recently seen an increase in the attention being paid by Arab viewers and even TV stations to series and movies that originate from Turkey! This obviously includes ‘Noor’ and the upcoming movie ‘Aby Wa Ebny’ (My Father and My Son) which Topa Boyokostn will star in. I cannot help but wonder if this attention is positive or negative."
    - It's more positive than negative; the connections are being built again so in terms of world connections and buisness it is such an advantage as I have read somehwere else on the net that the profits of Turkish furniture has increased in Dubai.
Plus Arabs are not that different from Turks - but probably are in terms of the strength of their religion.

"As one of the stars of ‘Noor’ said presenting Turkish series in the Arab world is building a bridge between two cultures that are seemingly separated. But is this bridge feeding the Arab youth ‘bad’ information?"
    - good and badcan be taken from anything and everthing. So if you want to say that it is passing the bad, don't forget to say it is also passing the good.

"I mean it appears to me –a third part observer who has visited Turkey- that the country is becoming more and more ‘European’ and even when I curiously watched an episode of ‘Noor’ this became very apparent.
    - If you haven't noticed that before then that is very worrying. The best example to look at is Dubai where no longer is there a trace of culture, tradition or even history - it has become a completely modified country... no longer an Arab Country - I mean why does the world need a second Eiffel Tower?
This has been going on for such a long time.

"Obviously the viewer is the arbiter in this situation but I personally think that the Turkish series are nothing special and I really do not see what all the hype is about!"
    - I disagree; the drama series has a good story line with great characters. The development throughout the drama series is just great to watch - the tough love between the Mohanad and Nour, and the surroundings that affect and shape them and the incidents. It's very good and episode by episode you cannot help but like the show more and more.

Would be interested to know what you all think.

-Finally somone with reason! I too don't see what's the hype about the series Noor...!? the actors are not even attractive in comparison with handsome men and beautiful women all around the world.

"The Turkish Dramas give us a break from the boring outlines and plots of Egyptian dramas"
-I agree, I'm sick of Egyptian dramas too. But I'm not with Turkish as substitute.

Bring us soap opras like Dynasty, that would be a HIT with arabic voice overs. In Dyansty and other American soap opras one learn too much other than boka2 3ala il atlal and desesperation and stress like arabic dramas.

i would very much appreciate if you could provide an english version of this tele series, as viewers of dubai and other arabic countries are not only arabic speaking. i always watch this series with my arabic friends so they can translate to me what's the conversation all about. nonetheless, as i observe with the actions of the actors and actresses, i am very much hook up with this love story. i admire noor and i hope there will be a surprising event coming up. noor is not lame and her story depicts the new age of women in the society. keep it up!!!

abby please tell me a littlemore on these since i watch it every day and as I am an Ethiopian, who doesn't understand any of those languages. I simply feel very sympathetic to noor thinking that she is a poor girl that doesn't have any prestige to link her to that rich family and found to be rejected by some family members due to her back ground and but loved by Muhannat and some very few there. Am I right?

There is alot of drama, but that's normal for any type of series. It's like a soap opera. The only thing I really didn't like about the show is how they had an episode in which they were drinking alcohol during a ramadan scene.
I think some middle eastern t.v. shows are immitating western ways such as meeting in a club, and drinking alcohol while relating themselves to Islam. I don't think this is a good message to send to our youth.

I believe the author is highly mistaken. Shows like Noor are popular in the Arab countries due to their extreme similarity with Arab culture and the everyday problems Arab families go through. Granted, in the shows they are exaggerated and not all families are that wealthy, but there are many similarities. What you call, "bad influence", are the unspoken things that occur constantly in the Arab world. The plot lines that you think 'go too far', I believe don't go far enough. While our culture is based on conservativeness and moral behavior, many of the problems arise because they are kept hidden. These shows bring them to light and put things in perspective.

Anyway, I personally enjoy the show. It's the first truly entertaining show I have seen on Arabic satellite. I was wondering, however, how many episodes of Noor there are, total, and where I would be able to watch them on the internet?
    Would someone kindly answer please?
    Thank you.

    hi feyiza,

let's discuss this in email com. my email is abygail.daye@gmail.com

for those who are watching NOOR, let me let you think deeply that the series has its great story which is really happening all around the globe. yes, most women are suffering like NOOR. but eventually, protagonist always has his or her way of depicting the character they are protraying. stories like this have to be appreciated and we have to learn from it as new women of the society.

even NOOR is keeping quiet at some point in the series, eventually, she will grow and show some kind of attitude in the end. please watch NOOR everyday and realize how she will rise in the story.

for the film makers of noor, please make an english version of the series so we can better understand and relate to the story.

I LOVE NOOR SO MUCH!!! KEEP IT UP.

  1. Ozgur | June 20, 2008 5:21 PM

I am Turkish. I really like that the Arab viewers like that movie. Most people think that it serves as the missing link between the Arab culture and the European Culture. There are a couple of things to remember while watching this series:

    1. This is about an extremely rich family. Not all Turks are like that. This series was not very popular in Turkey. Most people will not know about Noor or Gumus in Turkey.

    2. Religion is almost non-existent in this series. The number of practising Turkish Muslims is considerably high. Here, you see none of them.

    3. The immoral stuff that happens in this series are probably more common in the Arab world than it is in Turkey. We are not as rich as the Qataris, Kuwaitis, UAEs, or most Saudis. What do most of them do? You know better.

    4. I wish it had references to our brotherhood, the brotherhood between the Arab world and Turkey. Above all, we are all Muslims.

    5. I wish Arab viewers would also like other series from more conservative TV channels in Turkey. We really have great series. Turkey is the number one of series in the world (per capita).

I like the tv series noor and sanawat al day3... they show life from a different angle. things like what happens in noor really does happen....thats the main point...yea some of the characters are a bit overrated but pay attention to the theme and not necessarily who is in it....read between the lines and there is a true lesson...

Noor is such a great show. I love watching it. Of course, being egyptian I sometimes don't understand every word that's said. I think they're speaking in a lebanese dialect. It's fun for me because now I'm learning a different dialect. The show is so emotional and of course dramatic. Noor puts up with a lot as do a lot of women. I really hope Mohaned and Noor stay together.

Not all shows have to revolve around religion. It's nice to take a break from religion. We are people living in the world struggling through different issues in our lives involving love, work, family and everything else. Not all of that has to do with religion.

  1. Manel | June 24, 2008 11:14 AM

    Hi,

I am sorry I did not have the time to read all posts, but I was a little amazed by this article. I cant help but wonder if you actually wrote this article about the show itself, or for the comments you made, stating that you don't know if this attention to this show is positive or negative and the fact that there is a bridge between both cultures (arabic and turkish). You also mention that you wonder if this will have a good or bad impact on the Arab youth....and did not stop yourself stating that this show is to westernised, the country is too European to your taste.
Well let me tell you that I am an Arab, from Tunisia, and Turkish people are a lot more religious than any northern African countries, and do have real Muslim people, a lot more than in these countries, and that they do practice their religion a lot more, so if the country is westernized it is more for political and economic issues, than anything else.
I do not think this kind of show will have bad influence on Arabs, and as far as I am concerned, common let's be honest, don't you think there are other shows in this whole world that could jeopardise our youth????
