Somehow the world has adapted to working with GMT as the universal time standard, even TV channels use it! However, at a recent conference in Saudi Arabia some Muslim scholars decided that we should all scrap GMT and adopt Saudi time as Mecca is the true center of the Earth. The reasons for this are endless including the fact that as Muslims we face that direction at least five times a day for prayer and that Mecca is actually in perfect alignment with magnetic north. To be honest, and as a devout Muslim, I truly disagree. GMT has been around forever and now is not the time to change it! Obviously Mecca has it’s importance to us all as Muslims, but it is important as a religious item and not a geographical location.
In addition to this, GMT has no religious connotations and so it is fair for everyone to use it, whereas if we use Saudi time that would be imposing our beliefs on people of other religions!
What do you think: should we adopt Saudi time?!

I agree with Karim, I'm muslim too, but don 't agree with these moslimscholars. I do not see any problem with the GMT, why would they change something that works perfectly?Plus Greenwich is very beautiful, I visited it when is was 15 years old :)
1) I also read that they want to make Mecca the centre of the world, which actually is not.
2) They should occupy themselves with serious issues, e.g womenrights in their country and what to do in the future when teir wil be no oil, water issues......

Please watch what you say.. because i'm a Muslim woman and i lived in Saudi for ten years, and have been living out of there for 12 years...well, i love it and would LOVE to go back there... which i would after my medical degree ends. It's a great country, and women do have rights, its the people that try to twist their rights...so don't judge Islamic Law, or ISLAM by studying Muslims.. study Islam to learn Islam.
As for the article...i don't care really...Yeah Mecca is in the center, but i don't care if they do wanna do that or not.. but i know problems will happen if they do it.. cuz people are just stupid like that... so for that, i don't want the change.. but if it was up to me.. yeah i'd do it! It's a great reminder to all of us when we watch tv! =D

I'll disagree with you guys its not a religious issue I think its a cultural issue.. I'll agree to make everything arabic why americans have thier own size units. emprature units even timing system as Central, pacific... we have to have our own culture which is exist but we don't use it. we have hijri calender . we have our numbering system and so on...
its for all arab not arab muslims that we should have our own system and spread it to the world we don't force anybody to use it but we have to use it for our proud.

I totally agree with you that these people and whats going on in SA doesnt reflect islam at all in anyway... i dont why you misunderstand me but i never meant t o say anything bad about Islam!
