Who would think that something beautiful and powerful can be created from the wreckage of the September 11 tragedy? A vision and thorough planning makes it all possible, as demonstrated in the new US Navy warship. This ship is created using the metal from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. The christening of the USS New York was held last Saturday. As can be expected, thousands of people attended the event and most them are the families of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy.
The USS New York makes use of over 7.5 tonnes of steel from the twin towers’ site. This is used on the bow stem. And to symbolize the twin towers, it contains two gray bars with a banner that says “Never Forget”, a very poignant line for the 9/11 victims’ families. The whole ship weighs 25-tonnes and is consisting of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines always ready for deployment. Developing the ship cost a total of $1 billion.
After the attack there was a plan of building a ship but no name was chosen yet. The name USS New York is used by making an exception to the Navy Policy of using state names exclusively to nuclear submarines.

cool!
its a silly idea,,, what about all the people in Palestine and other muslims dying daily? what did we do for them?
Jawa,
what are you talking about??!! what does this ship has to do with what you mentioned! its not like King Abdullah or Sheikh x or y built the ship .... DUH!!
They know how to make a big deal about their people suffering as if they were the only ones who suffer. Ignoring the fact that they themselves cause suffering to others ie. Iraq. But what Jawa is getting at is that it is pointless creating such thing because every day there are others suffering up to this very day. And 9/11 was a few years ago and it ended. It was a suffering that came and went. But for some people today, the suffering came and stays with them everywhere they go.
Personally I think it would have been better creating a huge statue by connecting the pieces and create something more artistic - that's what I would call beautiful. But a warship - as if it's not enough the number of wars that they have been involved one way or another?!! It's a little lame and even stupid.
Quick question: does steel and sea water go well together? I thought it didn't.
Lou Lou - SHUT UP. The people of 9/11 there suffering came and went? Are you kidding me. The THOUSANDS that died in ONE day, and their family have to go through it EVERYDAY! I had TWO cousins that died that day, and everyone in my entire family has to think about that. They didn't just kill Americans they killed ARABS and didn't even care what they did or who they killed. People that DID NOTHING TO ANYONE, but were at work or walking or shopping and DIED for NOTHING. SO SHUT UP! The United States built a NAVY ship that stands for something!
listen tania assad, look i agree with you that the people killed in 9/11 did nothing and they were just victims, but what about our muslims that died in iraq and that were sexually abused by american soldiers who have the dirtiest and sickest mind ever, what did they do to derseve this? nothing, nothing, victims and innnocent people always have to make a sacrifice, but why is their sacrifice always more important then our victims? why are we always forgotten and they are not? my uncle was murdered in the iraqi war what did he do? he was going to pray in the mosque and the mosque was bombed, what did he do wrong? is it wrong to pray?
after what happened to him and his family i now belive in something called a life is for a life, and blood is for blood, our arabic blood is not cheap and it will never be forgotton but they day will come when the arabs will wake up and reliase that its time for revenge!!!
Tania,
You just prove my point. Yes, the wounds are still there. But you just said it, "ONE DAY!" That was one day that changed the lives of many. I agree with every word that you said.
What I am saying is that everyday there are others suffereing... just like you guys did... some "DID NOTHING TO ANYONE"... some "DIED for NOTHING"... who will be next... that's the fear that runs through the minds of others living in parts of the world where a smile or a laugh is something they cannot do.
Whereas in America, things are somewhat back to normal. People are working... people have a hospital to go to and receive efficient treatment... people even go to fancy resturants... can't you guys take what you have for granted? You guys are living a life - haven't forgotten the event but you still live for what is today. Some parts of the world can't live because of the restricitions held against them... sometimes held by the Americans.
Over the years America has shown itself as a State of Hypocrisy and Irony. I want to feel sorry for those who have been through 9/11 but I can only feel more sorry for those who have had to endure the pain and agony of more than one day...more than one year.
A warship may stand fro something but what will it be used for? War.
Simple equation, war = suffering.
And here you are complaining about America and its suffering. To me, it seems like they are pleased to continue bringing more suffering to the world.
If you want respect, come in peace. Not in search of more blood and oil.
PS: I don't budge from what I said earlier.
Maya,
First and most importantly, I am very sorry to read about what happened to your uncle.
Secondly, and for Tania, those are examples of what goes on. If you check out sites like Youtube - you'll probably find some more.
I liked the part where you said:
"... our arabic blood is not cheap and it will never be forgotton but they day will come when the arabs will wake up and reliase that its time for revenge!!!"
I'm on stand-by!
not every american solider is DIRTY, and not every american solider went to iraq to kill innocent people. They had no choice, they go where they are sent. NO, I DON'T AGREE WITH ANYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN IRAQ, and NO, I DON'T BELIEVE THEY SHOULD HAVE EVEN WENT IN THE FIRST PLACE, but that was GEORGE BUSHS decision. don't blame the american people for actions of one stupid man that had his own personal agenda. Majority of everyone in the united states don't believe in the Iraq war. once the NEW president comes into office the american soldiers will be pulled out of Iraq.
Tania,
Can you not see what you are doing? You are doing what the American Soldiers are doing - blaming others and lifting their hands away from the reponsibility. The very hands that commited crimes and killings; they chose to believe that it wasn't them and that it was those of a higher status, authority, power.
I will blame the American Soliders - and so will many. They say that one picture is worth a thousand words. We've seen enough to make up our own minds and know who are in the right and who are in the wrong.
"not every american solider is DIRTY, and not every american solider went to iraq to kill innocent people."
They don't even know who they are fighting up against. They don't ahve a clue. They just know that in order to live one more day you need to survive. How can you tell the difference between an innocent and a "terrorist"? You can't.
But you can't afford to waste time to find out because thet can be you gone. It's this game of survival!
The reason why I say "terrorist" and not terrorist is because the true defiinition, and the one that many are good at modifying the once so clear definition, is that it is an individual or an organization or a state that uses violence and harm innocent civilians". And by the Americans entering another country where they act so freely and use violence - it makes them the terrorists of Iraq!
(if you ask me; that's where America being known as the State of Irony and Hypocrisy rises)
In the past, soliders who did not agree with the war would step down even if it means being sent to jail. Once they came out, can you imagine the number of people that respected them greatly for chosing to not fight a war that had no result other than blood. Surely that sense of pride and righteousness would be ever so overwhelming for those who have been thrown behind bars.
I don't really care what other Americans think of the war. The videos that I see on certain website of the way Americans are treating others is beyond disgraceful.
"once the NEW president comes into office the american soldiers will be pulled out of Iraq."
That's what many promise but don't do because they realize how big a mess they have created. Leaving the country in the state where it is unable to support its own self is not correct. What's that sort of behaviour supposed to say, "we've got as much oil as we wanted, we've stolen so many precious historic items as we wanted, we've destroyed as much of the beauty of the country as we've wanted, we even created a pipeline that takes the oil from Iraq an all the into Israel as we've wanted,.. ladies and gentlemen, we're done!"
Fools! Fools if all you American think it's all that easy.
Whether or not the Americans do pull out of Iraq, they will walk out as a disgrace. They fought a pointless and lost war, and continued to pretend that there was a reason when the whole world knew there wasn't.
If I was aksed what I would want to do with the pieces of the remains of 9/11, I'd say I want to create something that would reflect American in America, and not Americans outside America. I would say I want an Artistic monument to show life and beauty. I would say open a garden where the huge artwork will lie at the heart of th garden. I would like people to look at it and be happy. I would ask to make it colourful as possible and I'd want it to have much more meaning. I want people to look at it and smile, and say peace be with you. You didn't deserve to leave but I'm grateful for the times we have spent together. I want it to be in this place where people can come to it whenever they feel like it, even if they simply want to talk to it. I want it to symbolize beauty in the form of joy and peace... and not in the form of war and blood because enough is enough.
