Sir Edmund Hillary (right) and Tenzing Norgay (left)

The first man to reach the top of the highest mountain on Earth ... has died yesterday.
Sir Edmund Hillary, died in his homeland of New Zealand at the age of 88.
Sir Edmund won worldwide acclaim in 1953 by becoming the first man to climb to the the 8850-meter high summit of Mount Everest.
Sir Edmund recalled in “High Adventure” 1955:
"As I chipped steps, I wondered how long we could keep it up. Then I realized that the ridge, instead of rising ahead, now dropped sharply away. I looked upward to see a narrow ridge running up to a sharp point. A few more whacks of the ice ax and we stood on the summit."

Sir Edmund wasn't alone on this dangerous trip, he was joined by his Buddhist guide, Tenzing Norgay (died back in 1986) ... when they reached the top, Norgay buried biscuits and chocolate as an offering to the gods of Everest.
Then they ate a mint cake, strapped on their oxygen tanks and began the climb down!
They became worldwide heroes ... and still remain.
RIP ...
