At the beginning of each year Lebanese singer Haifa Wehbe manages to land herself a spot on several front pages- unfortunately for her the reason is never good! This year the Egyptian media is outraged that the ‘Monwaaat’ (‘Varieties’) Egyptian channel called upon Haifa Wehbe to be the star of New Years Eve on their screens! According to these journalists ‘Monwaaat’ represents Egypt and Egyptian Media so it is unacceptable to have a singer that depends on ‘seduction and nakedness’ to perform.
They claim that Haifa’s appearance reflects badly on Egypt and Egyptian culture. Obviously whether or not you agree will depend on the extent to which you dislike Haifa! In my opinion, and I am not a Haifa fan, the attack on her is, for once, unfair! Regardless of whether she does ‘depend on seduction’ Haifa is quite popular and the fact that she was called upon to sing on New Years Eve says nothing more about Egypt other than that it embraces all peoples! Its time to stop making a big deal out of nothing just to fill the front pages of tabloids!

please, then, masreya, why dont you INTERPRET the sentence "Masr om el donya" in english. if im not mistaken, it means, in the literal sense at least, Egypt is the mother of the world. now that in itself borders on superiority...even if you did give "credit" to other arab countries. i've been living here in Australia for nearly 5 years and i havent heard the phrase, "masr om el donya"...so nope, if it was known worldwide i wouldve known it.besides, just because it is mentioned in the Quran, it doesnt make it a fact unless it was proven..especially if your not even a muslim like myself. they might use the phrase in ads concerning tourism to attract more people because of such things as tradition, history, the entertainment industry but as far as i know, my country is rich with tradition, history and entertainment yet i don't go about boasting how MAGNIFICENT it is or how it helped change people's lives in whatever aspect of life.
