500 Years of Historical Treasure in a Laundry Room

A laundry room… I’d never think that this is a place where one can find a timeless treasure but that is exactly what was found in the filing cabinet in a Swiss laundry room. The treasure is in the form of a collection of historical letters – a collection that range for over 500 years, painstakingly collected by inveterate collector Albin Schram. The letters also cover various areas like art, science, philosophy and literature. But perhaps the most interesting among the collection is the letter made by Napoleon for the love of his life Josephine. As you probably can guess, it’s no ordinary letter; it’s a love letter! A woman’s heart can really go a-flutter when it comes to love letters right? Especially if it contains line like, “I send you three kisses – one on your heart, one on your mouth and one on your eyes”.

This line is among those written by Napoleon and its really quite romantic! That particular letter was written the morning after the couple had an argument.

Another fascinating letter is the one written by John Donne to Lady Kingsmill after her husband died on October 1624. That time Donne was dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral and in the letter he advised Lady Kingsmill not to suspect God’s action with regards to her husband’s death. In the auction of the collection that will be held on July 3, this letter is speculated to fetch a price of 120, 000 pounds. There are also letters by Ernest Hemingway and lots more.
All of the letters in the collection will be auctioned by Christie’s book department and is hoped to make 2.3 million pounds or $4.6 million.

Wish I could read some of those letters, they really sound so interesting, don’t you think so?
