Khadija El-Gamal (the daughter of a rich businessman) and Gamal Mubarak (the son of Husni Mubarak) got married last month and their wedding party was held in Sharm El-Sheikh on the beginning of this month, precisely on Friday, the 4th of May which also marks the birthday of President Mubarak!

If you are wondering how Khadija El-Gamal looks, here are some recent photos of her:

Well of course not a stunner, but she has a class of her own.
Real Egyptian attractiveness. I like her hair and dress style.

Well I keep hearing Egyptian women are much better than this or that.
I heard it when Ehsan Hatem was elected, and now at Khadiga. How come we don't see those 100-time-better Egyptians?
Of course you would know better, and since I have never been to Egypt, and since the few Egyptian women I encountered are not better than these two, then you should know better.
However I will stick to my opinion pending seeing an Egyptian woman 100 times better than Ehsan or Khadiga.

U have seen many in the movies...be a bit more objective & logical.

Besides that it's not important, Mariam Fakhr il Deen was stunning but damaha kan beyoltosh God bless her heart. Lots of Egy's r funny as hell with the whitest of hearts & that's all that matters (even if they r a bit too hot tempered at times). I don't know why u people compete on looks it's pathetic.

If u r top in terms of looks then it means u r deficient in personality because God makes us all equal in one way or the other. Well, I say God & made but this is in question nowadays. Same goes for power, if u have that then u will be lacking in respect. If you’re beautiful then u r either boring or lacking in sense of humour. And so on…

It’s rare rare rare 2 find people who can combine looks& personality. And even so looks will eventually fade, u might get ill, u might be in an accident & all you’ll be left with is whatever it is u have grown inside yourself. So stop sh*t stirring.

I have seen many in the movies 40 to 20 years ago.
Come one be real man, you are still using Mariam Fakhreddine as an argument who looks more Hungarian than Egyptian (Her mother was Hungarian) you know and now is nothing more than a senile old bag.
And no one asked you for your complicated essay on looks and hmour. I was precise in specifying the 100 times better looking Egyptian women whom, you have to admit, are quite lacking in your movies and TV programs.
The best according to me are Mona Zaki and Yasmine Abdel Aziz whom on the "stunner scale" rank as cuties at best.
Beauties abounded in Egyptian cinemas decades ago though European-blooded ladies (Such as Nadia Lotfi, Mervat Amine, Layla Elwi) are not, at least for me, a real indicator of native Egyptian beauty.

Yes and Haifa's mother is Egyptian. So stop changing the rules for Egyptians. If a leb is half and half as in Salma, Shakira...then u parade & cry about the fact that they r lebs. Mervets dad is Egyptian, Youssra's dad is Egyptian, Hend's dad is Egyptian, Laila's dad is Egyptian, Shadia's dad is Egyptian…Looking native is irrelevant. You do not even know what Nefertiti looks like to say who and who doesn't look native. Did she creep up into your dreams and give u an explanation of how Egy's r meant 2 look? Do Americans look native? No they don't but we still classify them as Americans and they r not an old civilization. The fact is they have Egyptian blood...Get over it. Arab men like to marry Non-Arabs or from different Arabic countries, get over it. How silly of u to debate in such a one-sided way. 7elw leekom and we7ish le gherkom. Nadia Lotfi without hair dye looks like any Egyptian. How superficial 2 assert that coz of her fake hair colour she does not look native enough.

I don't even like movies, but u r bringing it down to that & miss world... As far as I am concerned I am happy for beautiful women to wear higab & have a life beyond looks.

And this is a forum...do not tell me what to say and what not 2 say. I'll say what I wish as long as it's with respect & reason. No one asked your opinion either. What an attitude!

She's not an old bag...do not discriminate u ageist. One day u will be old too.

as far as im concerned this topic is about khadiga NOT to steroeotype what Egyptian women look like. A human is a human!! ANd as already established, its really the inside that u'll be left with over time.

Ihsan Hatem was not on the top 15 in miss universe. Khadiga is not pretty at all, but of course money make the miracles, since she's rich and wealthy she has to look good no matter what, but still she need alot of work, but we have to remember hat she is 24 and her husband 42, almost 20 years younger than him. wow

lebchris
31 May, 7:03AM

See, YOU are implying that our women look better not us.
So it is YOU guys who have issues and complexes.
What brings Haifa into this? Haifa is pretty, especially after plastic surgery and lenses but in NO WAY looks Lebanese, she looks Arab Egyptian though her father is Lebanese. She happens to be an attractive and sexy woman with a Lebanese passport and probably some Lebanese genes but by no means looks Lebanese.
Shakira looks to me rather Colombian and NOT beautiful mind you. Salma Hayek looks more Lebanese than Haifa.
Believe me I know what I am talking about since I am Lebanese and live in Lebanon and know what we really look like.
So looking native is irrelevant you say?
So why are we having this discussion in first place.
I just wanted to know why don't we see Egyptian stunners anymore and you embarked on another of your pointless, aimless and contrived essays.
Of course you cannot compare the Americans a recent population made up of 80% of white Europeans who came from just about everywhere mixed with native indians, black, asians, latins etc, with a rooted country like Egypts with millenia of history and human presence.
I thought the drawings found in the Pyramids and archeological excavation are supposed to provide an insight about what native Egyptians looked like. An d believe me in none of the depictions I saw I have seen a Maryam Fakhreddine lookalike!
So my dear you are the one who are taking up the one-sided approach in the debate.
Oh and about Nadia Lotfi (Real name Paula of a Polish mother) in her oldest movie she always had blond hair. Even dying it pitch black the woman does not even look Mediterranean! But I guess your vision is warped like your mind.
As for Miss World, the only one you have, is of course Greek. Antigone Costanda does not really sounds Egyptian to me.
You like your women to wear veils? Well that is your opinion and culture that I cannot fully understand since I don't have it where I live, but from what I saw in Egypt, you beautiful women shoot to stardom, shoot quite indecent film scenes, then at a certain point in time they get illuminated and wear the Hijab.
Very honest.
Oh now I am ageist too???
Heheheh I mean each time you write you prove one more what a complexed person you are. Pitiful.

So back to my question, how come we do not see anymore Egyptian stunners?

George
31 May, 7:19AM

hmm very unattractive..
how the hell did he choose her..I guess he chose brains, personality, and charm over looks..

a lot of egyptian girls in my school look like her..

A very beautiful woman is political analyst Maria Maalouf..now this is a beautiful women...she is dead sexy...and intelligent....to have both is rare in the middle east....

I mean in the blad al sham they are a lot of beautiful women....but only a handful are as articulate and astute as Maria...

S.M.S.
31 May, 8:02AM

Actually no one was comparing looks or countries until you brought it up Masreya, however you are totally right, this is about Khadiga and nothing else.
However I have to respond to George's comment.
George, Maria maalouf is pretty although sometimes looks bloated. Articulate and astute? No sorry.
Watching the woman pose her questions in proper Arabic(fous7a) is cringe worthy, she makes so many mistakes, you feel embarassed on her behalf and you wonder how she became a presenter of a political program. Also her nasal and whiny voice detracts from her beauty.
Bilad ElSham and the Middle East have much more intelligent women ya George. Is she a real political analyst? Hmmmmm
Cheers anyway.
I didn't know that Shadia's mother wasn't Egyptian. What was she? Not that it really matters.
Ehsan was really beautiful, but her body was not toned, too pale and she looked quite shy, still better looking than some of the top 15 in MU.
It is so true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Cleopatra is said to be less of a conventional beauty as they picture her in recent movies. God knows what beauty standards they held back then, but today she would not be described as beautiful.

lebchris
31 May, 8:46AM

S.M.S Speaking of Cleopatra, even she was not a native Egyptian. Obviously she has a Greek name, and second she was the descendant of the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty who ruled Egypt for centuries.
Research proved that this dynasty, although taking up the Pharaohs apparels, looks and facade, they did not genetically mix with the native population.
She even had Roman lovers but Egyptians are not mentioned at least in historical record.

So since native beauty does not exist, and since Mediterranean countries are known to be mixed genetically by virtue of mutual conquests between north and south, east and west, this has become a competition of whose genetic mixture is better than the other right? ;)

31 May, 9:54AM

Ehhh :D. I wonder what are your thoughts on Maria Maalouf lebchris???

lebchris
31 May, 1:15PM

Mmmm Maria Maalouf. I have mixed feelings about this one, but definitely to the unfavourable side.

She is pretty no doubt. First time I saw her, she seemed to me an unrefined copy of Monica Bellucci. I mean the features, the fair skin, the dark hair the Mediterranean appeal. Her chubbiness and her not-so-stylish sense of dressing were going against here.
However, even when they revamped her look the substance remained the same.
She lacks femininity when she interviews her guests. She is always on the offensive and not pleasing to watch.
When she speaks Arabic she is artificial and lacks grace.
Since NTV is not among my favorite stations, especially these days, I tend to forget who Maria Maalouf is and she obviously does not figure in my list of the Lebanese queens of political talk shows or debate moderators namely Gisele Khoury and Maguy Farah.
Maria has the looks and the ambition, but I think she must undergo some training to improve and maybe talk more Lebanese to add some naturalness to her robotic performance.
To sum it up, I share the same opinion as yours ;)

lebchris
31 May, 1:27PM

And for you George
I have not visited any Middle Eastern country so I cannot confirm or counter your opinion but I can definitely speak of the Lebanese women.
Though the current image of the Lebanese woman is that of a plastic doll only interested in trivial matters, the truth is the universities of Beirut abound with gorgeous women with high intelligence and successful careers.
I went to the Jesuit university of Beirut and met there countless extremely beautiful young ladies who graduated and earned more money than their own husbands.
I went to the same campus the same year as Nadine Labaki and Carole Samaha for instance.
The former is not only one of the most successful directors in Lebanon but a real and natural beauty as well. As for Carole, in addition to her good looks, nice body and her high intelligence, she knew well how to manage her vocal and acting talent and present a good example of a pop Lebanese artists without being cheap.

Wow judging what a whole society looked like from 2-dimensional images. Now that's intelligence 4 u when we can't even decide what existing people look like.

I am not implying anything! I'm open to debate but not to bitter behaviour. I will never agree with u on plastic surgery & u can continue to claim that people use the ‘u have plastic surgery line’ as an excuse but yes your society takes advantage of it more than any other Middle-Eastern/ East European/ Asian country. I'm very anti-plastic surgery regardless of who it is for & I have many reasons 2 be against it; one being the lack of doctors there are for serious cases such as heart, brain...surgery, and the incredible lengths of waiting lists for people who have problems with organs etc. The take-away nature of plastic surgery with the huge amount of docs in this field also means that the charge for plastic is nothing in comparison to cases where lives are at risk. If u want your nose done then u r in and out and finito. It's an issue riddled with human values but u don't seem to care about that. Perhaps u've had something done who knows. Your entire thought process seems to be 'so long as it improves them' rather than let them go and deal with their inner demons before considering changing Gods given creation. I thought u were a Christian!

U need to venture out of Lebanon. You seem to be stuck in a shell 2 be honest. Mind u, u r desperate 2 get out so here’s to waiting 4 the opportunity.

I always classified myself as a citizen of the world, a temporary one. But you're way of thinking would make anyone justified in becoming against you and your belief system. Rabinah Yeshfy. You are lacking in tolerance greatly my dear and very motakaberra (nose in the air). I think this is the view of most people here...you're snotty, sort it out rather than ignore it.

If u have no idea about higab then don't venture in2 talking about it. Only God knows what lies in each person’s heart so do not even attempt to belittle those who choose it as a lifestyle.

You are ageist ya gahla. Calling anyone an 'old' bag is a statement against their elderly age, u don't have to be a genius to figure it out either. I can't believe how shallow u r. I used to do voluntary work for the elderly, many of whom were difficult but with issues, so u have no right at all to call anyone an old bag. Google the phrase instead of spending time researching every woman’s roots and background.

Here’s 1 instance 4 u:
http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0003-1283%28199123%2966%3A3%3C333%3AOMADOM%3E2.0.CO%3B2-%23&size=LARGE&origin=JSTOR-enlargePage

AHAAHAH SAAAAM
Another contrived, aimless pointless essay.
I think you have verbal diarrhoea, just writing for the sake of writing and talking nonesense in the end.
You did not answer my very simple question and you launched a preaching tirade about tolerance, venturing out of the country (AAHAHAH That is a good one, considering I am married to an Italian and travelling each two months to somewhere new and having worked for the UN) and god knows what.
I said I cannot understand the Hijab as it is not part of my native culture but I do not fight against it.
Anyway it is a fact that most of your actresses wear the Hijab after becoming old bags or after leading a quite indecent life. I say MOST. Now don't preach about the few exception.
Anyway it is useless to debate with you.
I rest my case.
Next time do me a favor and ignore my post, or give a three line RELEVANT answer. I wish they sell pills for verbal diarrhoea eheheh, in the mean time try to re-read your post and check them for relevancy before making a fool of yourself.
Yalla sallimly 3al batengan ya wala

Didn't answer coz I am skim reading whatever u say so don't know the question. Doing about 10 assignments at once so I'm in a writing mood. You're being hypocritical considering u like to write a lot too, nothing new though.

Nah I have heard u talk about Higab before in other topics, don't act innocent suddenly. You lack a lot of respect. No point in re-reading your posts or reading it aslan...fuelled by hatred & female venom.

So now we know that there r many sides to your discrimination. Looking forward really to seeing the next attack.

Why r u typing out laughter? Sado. I like bitingan...what's that got 2 do with anything? Anyhow like I said Rabinah yeshfy. God have mercy on your kids.

Higab has nothing to do with being native, stop banging on about native this and native that. Christianity has always depicted Mary with full higab and nuns wear their own style of Higab. Many Jews cover their hair with wigs or scarves when they worship in temples. Likewise for Hindus and Sikhs...2al native 2al. Seriously u remind me of a vampiress, fitting image. Lebchris the Vampiress...rhymes too; happy days.

Thought u were gonna ignore me? Can't resist can u, u cheeky beggar u.

Tell u something though, u r revealing a bit too much about your life, too much 2 go on now. I thought the Stalin's family comment was a bit misplaced after I wrote it but yep...making sense suddenly.

Surprise, surprise! Your word-count has improved too, immediately after mine. U know what they say…Great Minds think Alike.

Tunisianguy, I live at the Cote D'azur, 20 Kilometers away from the French border and Monaco.
If you happen to be in Monte Carlo, find your way to the Metropole, the fanciest shopping center there who happens to be owned by Mr. Boustani, a deputy of the Lebanese Parliament. Of course at the supermarket there they have a corner of typical Lebanese products : Almaza beer, red wine, Arak and even bulgur, tehini, distilled rose water and stuff.
I shop there once a month. It costs the double of what you find in Lebanon but considering is from a place as expensive and snobbish as Monaco, I think the price is rather fine.
For instance a bottle of Almaza beer that costs 1000 liras (less than one dollar) costs 1.30 euros at La Metropole supermarket.
Anyway it's worth it, our beer and wine are one of the best.

Aahaha Georges. Fellow bloggers are always shocked when they know the truth about my gender though I never tried to hide it. Maybe my rude tone and zest inspires masculinity. But rest assured, I am a full-fledged female ;).
It is true that I am a die-hard Lebanese nationalist of the worst kind, but in Lebanon females are very much into politics, especially when it comes to Lebanon's identity and culture.

An you know George, it takes a woman to really evaluate another woman. You men get enthralled easily while we get into details to "debunk" who is pretty and who is just alluring ;)

Anyway I like your approach to the Mediterranean family. It is true, I feel mediterranean to the bone and I would not live anywhere else. In fact here on the Riviera, I feel almost like in Lebanon. The setting, the scenery, the climate, the warm relations between people, the importance of family.
I would not trade my Mediterranean with the world.
Plus I love your reference to "Levantines". It is true we are a distinct group and a land of spiritual and cultural richness. The land of Jesus Christ himself whose Aramaic language still resounds in our spoken dialect, in the name of our villages, in the name of our ancestors...
I feel so sorry that things are that nasty between Lebanon, the Syrians and the Palestinians.
I hope it would get better one day.

As of my photo or more personal info, for the sake of privacy I would keep mum about them for the time being.
But you seem an interesting dude. Drop a line now and then.
The fact is I work long hours on the computer, and for a distraction I like to provoke bloggers here and there and laugh at the reactions.
In truth I am not really as nasty as may seem eheheh

Truth is I am married since 6 months so I have no children yet.
Since I work as a freelancer from home, I have time to pop up here and on other more serious political blogs now and then to have fun. Hit and run sort of.

I guess when I will have children you will see less of me here... In the meantime, you will have to suffer wa ha ha ha (kidding)

hey Lebchris,

yes absolutely...our language was aramaic...wow its very nice to see a east mediterranean so knowledgeable about their history and religion., because over here all the girls they wear Syria/ lebanon shirts and bracelets..they know about the borders of their country , what their capital is called and that's it......

what you said about the names of our cities and villages is 100% true....I tell this to everybody...I don't like Arabic fusha (formal Arabic) because it 100% foreign whereas the "aimee" (colloquial arabic) is saturated with indigenous Aramean words...

yes we are Levantines..it comes from the french word for the near east 'Levant" something that rises...in arabic we say "shami" but unfortunately today some people avoid the latter term because of politics...but mind you leb historians use it...

the 3 main EAST Mediterranean groups are Phoenician, Aramean, and Caananite...and like you said before...the levant is a mix of all 3.....
this guy "Philip Hitti" the foremost authority on levantine history ..says that people from Damascus are from "phoenician-canaanite" origins....

a lot of levantines think we are ethnically Arab...oh boy..I always end up educating them....they don't know there was an arab muslim invasion in 634 AD..sad stuff....

anyways my research (so far) has indicated that we stopped using Aramaic 500 years ago..and the Muslims did not force us to complte do away with aramaic and adopt Arabic..according to Robert Haddad,we made this decision..he substantiates this by saying that the first bibles written in arabic are 500 years old...

what have you read about this??
anyways since we love the Leavnt so much..
you would defintely love these websites..check them out and pass them onto your friends...

very beautiful stuff..I love this website....
EVERYBODY on waleg should check this site

http://www.mideastimage.com/.....tell me what you think....

the next site is full of hard-to-find photos...even though it's about syria..the people in photos are from all over the levant and egypt..

I am so used to you being condescending, rude and patronising, don't go all soft now! lol
At the end of your comments, it felt like you were running for the little "Miss Sunshine" award :D.
Anyway, married for 6 months? Did you live in Lebanon before? Ehh anyway good luck.
In regards to your comment about Lebanese guys, don't agree there. Will not delve into details and explanations however I cannot deny that there are plenty Lebanese guys that behave as you described.
EgyGirl, ur a sweetie.
Ah yes it would be appreciated if we don't see any pictures of Emile Junior, our son's president or his father for that matter. In the unlikely event it happened ya3ni please.

AHAHAAH SMS how did you know. Actually my nickname at my workplace was always Sunshine.
I always cheer them up.
You know, the internet provides with a mask allowing you to say the things and rudeness you would never dare do in your real life.
No one knows who you are, what you do, what do you mean, you can provoke and be attacked, then come back to your normal life and be nice again.
I have ALWAYS lived in Lebanon. I travelled here and there but never for more than two weeks in a row.
I met my husband just before the assassination of Hariri, and the drama going on in the country bonded our relation even more.
He encouraged me to go on demonstrations, he urge me to take part in the 14th of March mega demonstration... He knows about Lebanon's history and politics more than many Lebanese themselves.
My fluency in Italian language thanks to a four-year diploma of Italian earned ten years ago at the USJ (Universite Saint Joseph, or Jesuit university) without living in Italy was an added bonus to smitten the poor guy ;)
In fact, during the July war last year I decided finally to tie the know and I got married in a lovely medieval borough on the Mediterranean Italian cost of Italy. However Lebanon is in my blood, since I have no children yet U make trips there each three months. I was supposed to go back on July, but I am waiting to see how the security situation will end up.
That's enough share of information for now.
Gotta work.

Correction tie the knot not know.

As for you George I support what you say, but unfortunately cannot elaborate more cause I have to work now.
But you have to know that at least in Maronite schools until 4 decades ago, the Syriac language was taught to schoolgoers. My father for instance can read and understand a little but not converse obviously since it requires practice and since it was largely a dead language nowadays sadly.
Interestingly, I have found a book written by Elie Issa, called the Syriac terms in the modern Lebanese dialect. Inside there is a list of the terms we use daily, that you cannot find in any Arabic dictionary. All of those have a meaning in Syriac/Aramaic.
The other interesting thing is that I met at the UN
foreigners who have only studied Arabic (that is classica, Fus-ha). When they followed our conversation in Lebanese they were not able to understand more than 40-50% of what we said.
After a small study I made, it was those very typical Lebanese words that were hard for them to understand, since they are not of Arabic origin.
It is a very long and interesting matter on which I have made extensive readings and researches.
Be back when I have more time.
Bye now

hmm by what i hear the Lebanese aren't arabs..if they arent do you really think i or any other arabic person give a crap?..im pretty sure thats a NO.
infact, if lebchris and George are such a wonderful representation of the Lebanese im glad Lebanese people arent actually arabic.
being half jordanian and half venezuelan i am fully proud of my arabic heritage.why is it so hard for you people to actually accept this blatant fact...that you are arabic because you were either born or bred in an arabic society?for Christ's sake you may be descendants of European christians before a couple of thousands of years ago but you, your fathers and your forefathers have lived in an arabic society for long enough to accept the fact that inside out you are arabic.dont forget that your ancestors have married and mixed with arab people as well.i have lived in Australia for nearly 15 years and i have never been more Aussie.i still value and acknowledge my arabic and latin roots.

if you are so eager to deny your arabic heritage then what are you people doing on this bloody board?why do you continue to provoke the majority on this website - the arabs??
why don't you go and boast about your European blood line on other boards like IMDB for all the bloody crap i give.
lebchris, as far as i know, you were meant to be on an Italian beach drinking yourself silly with your lebanese beer yet since writing that particular post you are still on..if i were you i'd be down that beach the whole day.anyway im not going to get into the personal stuff i just wanted to prove my point...have a good one people and be proud of who you are no matter where you are from!!

oh my God, people , thats soo kiddish, well iam EHyptian, honest one .first of All Khadiga looks really cute and presentable we can always feel proud of her in case she had any important political role in Egypt and i think Gamal chose her for so many reasons. The idea now here regarding Mervat AMeedn, Nadia Lotfy ,Omar El sherief..being Egyptians or half Egyptians or even non Egyptians. well, actually , it wont matter..you know why? because they chose to be egyptians and proud to be .so thats it if iam saying iam egyptian then i chose to be. Why we dont count Hayfa wahbe as Egyptian? because she always say iam Lebanses and only Lebanese then she chose to be Lebanese.
Regarding Egyptian Beauty VS Lebanese Beauty.to be honest ,nowadays, both are not beautiful. From MS.Egypt every year i say what happened to Egyptian beauty?we used to have beatiful women..they disappeared..Regarding Lebanese beauty ,i believe that 85% are either edited by make up or by cosmetic surguries and again not natural beauty...

Lariisa

you are very ignorant!! you are throwing accusations left and right without comprehending what lebcrhis and I we're talking about...first of all we never "boasted" about european blood because the east mediterranean is PART of the ASian continent not Europe. 2. second of all my comments were directed to lebchris...not to the other participants...when I respond to other particpants I address them by their usernames....so my comments were addressed to soembody who does "give a crap" about what I'm saying....3. third of all levantine society is saturated with pre-Arabic influences...like we said about the names of villages , towns, colloquial words and expressions..etc..
4.fourth of all none of us (as best as I can recall) has denied any arabic heritage....
5. "thousands of years ago" my goodness you are so ignorant...if you read all of my comments to lebchris you would have noticed that I spoke about Aramaic being the language of levatine christians and muslims 500 years ago!!!and according to historians the levant 500 years ago was evenely split by the two religious communities
sixth of all your language, attitude and thinking resembles that of an obtuse simpleton...who said anything about being a "wonderful representaion""" such goofy pathetic language!!
girl you have no clue what you're talking about...stick to your kangeroos and boomerangs....

lebchris
2 June, 9:28AM

Larissa just missed the whole point
We are not ethnic European nor ethnic Arab.
We are ethnic Aramaics with a deep-roote and native Levantine heritage going way before the Arab invasion.
That is a fact proven by genetics, even my a quick glance to our faces.
That's for the genetic part.
For the linguistic part, there is no space here to elaborate, but I can give your good readings to do about it.
On the social habits, we may share some features with other Arabic societies, as we have others with Turkish, Greek, French, Italian and all the people who conquered us.
Of course the Arabic influence, being a derivative of the Islamic conquest played a ponderous effect on shaping the Lebanese society.
The people on the littoral were more affected, while the peoples of the mountains, such as my ancestors, had a very late contact with the Arab culture and adopted the language at a later stage.
In fact Arabic names of places are more on the costal strip but at 400 meters altitude, the names are once more Aramaic.
So Larissa, it is not denying "our" Arabic heritage, since I do not know what that means, but defending a true heritage that runs in our blood and that existed for thousands of years before Arabic came to our land.
I know that I am Lebanese. Period.
I defend my Lebanese identity.
The dialect I speak, the food I eat, the lifestyle I lead, the though I have, my social habits and the lot.
I do not know what being "Arabic" is.
In my work I have been in touch with Egyptians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Sudanese, Jordanians, and Algerians.
I can speak for myself, and I can say that we had a totally different vision of social habits (many believing in early and arranged marriage), political vision (death to Israel) etc.
As for the ethnic side you could blatantly see that a Sudanese is different than an Egyptian or a Tunisian. Plus on the language level I had to speak French to make myself understood by my Moroccan and Algerian colleagues.
We were 70 nationalities working on the premises and to tell the truth I did not feel more affinity or being comfortable with the Algerians for instance more than I had with the Portuguese, the French, the Belgians etc.
I am Lebanese, so I mingle with everyone and I have in my culture the basis to feel at home in many culture. When in France I speak French comfortably and discuss about the French programs, magazines, personalities, stars etc.
When in Turkey I feel at home when I eat the Kebab, Kofta, Kadaif, Falafel since the Ottomans kindly brought to our region, and of course typical Arabs obliterated the Turkish root and call them Arab cuisine!
When with people of Arab countries (thank God currently the Lebanese dialect is intelligible to many of them by virtue of our satellite TV) we talk about Al Moutanabbi, and even Haifa.
So what?
Remains to define what "Arabic heritage" means ya Larissa.
You have never been to Lebanon to judge so do not be that aggressive.
You are comfortable with your Arabic heritage? I understand that, you are ruled by a dynasty from Arabia. We don't.
Try to read more in the history of the levant to understand people's view before lashing out at them like an ignorant with shallow arguments
If you consider us Arabs, good for you.
Then it is not up to you to restrict us from posting here. This is dictatorship and against freedom of speech, a feature widespread in your Arab world anyway.
Plus what's it with my beer and the beach?
Too hot for you to handle? I went for a couple of hours and I am back. So what? You are quite funny girl. I pity you.
I do not know what being Arab is.
I only know what being Lebanese is, and I damn love it!

George, your hypocrisy doesnt seem to amuse me at all.check this:

"thousands of years ago" my goodness you are so ignorant"

fine thats ignorance on Larissa's part but hey..i wouldnt expect her to pinpoint how many years back people spoke the aramaic language..she sounds like a happy-go-for-life teenager.not a huge mistake on her part is she hasnt studied history well enough to know what your talking about.unlike what you said below judging that we are living in the present future:

'stick to your kangeroos and boomerangs....'

whats this supposed to mean?how ignorant was that statement?have you never been to Sydney..Perth..melbourne..Brisbane? do you seriously think people live with kangaroos and boomerangs in the outback?im sorry but when was the last time you saw an Australian movie/magazine...or did you really think that the bits filmed in Australia in 'crocodile dundee' are a reflection of the reality of life in Australia?if you did i think you need help...visit you local travel tour guide for a change.he'll help you out.
oh and George, heres a tip, watch out for what you say before you put your foot in your mouth again.

Lebchris, ermm you do not know what being an arab is yet you know what being lebanese is..fair enough but i don't get it
the Lebanese are arabs.my parents are Lebanese and so am i yet i still consider my self arabic..am i missing the point?we live in the middle east..Lebanon is a middle eastern country and as far as i know all the middle eastern countries in the middle east are arabic besides Israel which was once also arabic palestine.so am i still missing the point?
Lebchris,i loved you comment about the beach and the beer..it just shows your trying too hard.you've already gotten your point across..you don't have to shove it down our throats as well.marrying an Italian and living in Italy is not so hard to believe...but the whole "ok guys im going to slip on a bikini, grab some beer and chill out with my hubby and mates at the nearby beach" line is just trying a bit too hard.
anyway, back to the point at hand,im pretty sure other arabs understand what i say when i speak with the lebanese dialect.i would personally find it hard to listen to an Egyptian,Yemeni or palestinian speaking..its just a matter of different accents.but what you said.. i never thought of it that way.i'd like to look it up.
ciao for now

2 June, 2:13PM

Jacki
It is your opinion.
So for you Lebanese is Arab. Fine.
That implies that you are supposed to find the exact same culture in Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan, Oman, Lybia etc because they too consider themselves to be Arab.
So you are supposed to speak the same language, have the same social habits, same folkoric dress, same food, which, I am sorry to tell you, none of those are shared.
I live in the Near East to be more precise, and so is Turkey and Israel, and the Middle east has a country like Iran and all are not Arabic.
So you can live in that region of the world without adhering to the same culture.
And what about the bikini, the beer and my husband?
Are they too hot for you too to handle?
Is it an achievement to be married?
Very pathetic remark on your side.
Of course I know what Lebanese means, as for being Arabic, you'd have to explain to me what that means and we can go from there.
Oh and for not understanding your Arab brothers, it is not a problem of "accent". There are dialects.
As you know the real Arabs, who have always spoken Arabic are the ones living in the Arabian peninsula, roughly the Gulf countries today.
All countries outside that area that have now Arabic as their official language, had their own native culture and language before they were invaded by your parents (By the way the name Yazbeck is Turkish) and the "Arabic" they speak today is a mixture of Arabic, their native tongue and other words of the colonizers language.
Arabism nowadays is a desperate and failed attempt to revive the Arab empire which has spread from the Arabian peninsula on the basis of the Islamic religion.
Arabic still persists to this day because it is Holy language of the Koran.
Empires belong to age-old periods, this is the time of democratic republics. So stop dwelling on it.
Let's each of these so-called Arabic countries resolve their own problems and issues instead of waiting for other countries to resolve them just because they share the same written language.
The Arabic cutlure obliterates what happened before it and that is very wrong. I am Arab as much as I am Persian, Turkish, French, Crusaders, Greek, Roman Phoenician since all of these empires passed on my land and left some of their culture and genes.
I am a mixture of all those. I am Lebanese. Period.
Look at yourself: What is Arabic in you? You have a latin name, Turkish family name, expressing yourself in English and probably living in some western country. What makes you Arab? I wonder.

TunisianGuy
2 June, 6:06PM

George,

You had an argument until you blew it by "educating them" and calling people "ignorant".

lebchris,

Your last posts show some deep bitterness. Any reasons?!!
I have never been to Lebanon but I have spoke with so many Lebanese, few of them sounded like you most didn't in fact on the opposite. I only wonder why?

Arabism is not "a desperate attempt" it's an identity people chose to identify with and there will be always people on the disappointing side.

Being an Arab is a behavioral, cultural, linguistic and above all emotional belonging to a group/identity and definitely you are not by any means obliged to know what it is since you are foreigner to it. As Arab Tunisian I find myself privileged to have a history/culture of openness and interaction with the "others" without feeling the need to trash anybody, this privilege felt by so many "Mediterraneans" helps us differentiate between pure "hype" and "substance".

I don't want to turn this thread to political/ethnic/cultural/debate since there are so many other venues to carry such discussion, I only say oversimplification is as harmful as bitterness.
Only dead languages, cultures, civilisations don't interact with their surroundings( I should say anymore because at some point in history they did). It's in our lively human nature that we influence and be influenced by each other.

No need to be over-reacting nor patronizing.

Maybe you should grab your beer and towel and head to the beach one more time...mediterranean water is famous for it's powerful "baptizing" feel not just to the body but thoughts too.
