Solar Power Plant: The First in the Gulf

Solar Power Plant

The Middle East is one of the regions in the world that serve as the quarters of some of the most thriving businesses. Being home to a wide variety of businesses makes it imperative for the region to have consistent power supply. In Abu Dhabi in particular, the government is planning to put up a solar power plant amounting to $350 million. This venture is something new in the region that exports large volume of oil to the world at large. Abu Dhabi specifically possesses 90% of the oil reserve in the Emirates area.

Estimated to be completed by 2009, the 500-megawatt plant is expected to provide solar power to approximately 10,000 households. This is in accordance with their drive to lean away from their 100 percent dependence on hydrocarbon power.

Some of the investors in the said venture are Mubadala Development Co. subsidiary Future Energy and the Water & Electricity Authority of Abu Dhabi.

That'd be a really positive move to see more oil-rich countries embracing alternative energy, though the cynic in me thinks it is just for show.

After all, oil companies practically own our company, or at least have the biggest share of revenue.
