Globally, and just like Iraq, the court’s decision to hang the former Iraqi leader was met with equally divided opinions.
The European Union welcomed the verdict but said Saddam should not be put to death. At the Vatican, a spokesperson for the Pope, called the sentence a throwback to "eye for an eye" vengeance.
The globally-divided opinion echoes the same division on the invasion of Iraq in the first place in 2003. That same division is also very clear in the US at a time when the country is preparing for the Congressional Elections.
The whole "Hanging the Bad Guy" thing is a double-edged sword. It evokes the question of who is in fact "bad" and by what standards. Many agree that if Saddam is to be trailed, then US president Bush should be equally trailed.
