Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was convicted and sentenced to hang after a court found him guilty of crimes against humanity for the killings of 148 people in the Iraqi Shiit city of Dujail. The killings occurred after a failed assassination attempt on his life in 1982.
Saddam yelled out, "Long live the people and death to their enemies. Long live the glorious nation, and death to its enemies!"
Saddam had previously demanded that he be shot to death if found guilty as he said he was a military man and under Iraqi law, military men sentenced to death are shot. But apparently, the judge has striped him of his military status and sentenced him to death as any common criminal.
The verdict comes at a time when the whole country is under curfew since last night as a precaution for intensified violence after the verdict.
Saddam sentenced to hang sparked mixed reactions in the Arab World. Many countries were divided within themselves as to their support or hatred of the former Iraqi leader. While some see it as a victory for democracy, and a brutal dictator getting what he deserves, other see it as an American movie or play and display of what happens to those who stand in her way.
But perhaps no country is more mixed than Iraq itself. Despite the curfew, large numbers of protestors took to the streets of Tikrit, Saddam's birthplace in protest of the verdict, while at the same time, gunshots were seen rising in the air as others celebrated in Baghdad.
It's not clear what the sentence actually means for Iraq's future. Even though Saddam is probably the most famous figure in the country, his presence does not affect Iraqi politics nor has he done since the fall of the country after the US-lead invasion in 2003.

well...i think its good and bad. i mean for the sunnis it is bad, since he was nice to them and i feel sorry for them. but for the shites and kurds..i am very happy for them, Saddam should have treated all of them good then there would be no problems! saddam at least kept the country together and i know he was bad killing loads of innocent iraqis but the other side of him was not so bad..there was no civil war then..unlike now, so i think there are going to be more problems..i wish that Iraqis could all live together, happily and peacefully as a nation as they have sufferd too much already..

sorry but many of u here need to be educated about the 7mar saddam and what he did 2 iraq. the only reason that iraq appeared good and 'safe' during his lead is because the iraqis had no choice to refuse or disagree with anything, they wernt allowed to UTTER a word of critism against the regime, thats why they had to live with it and suffer the pain in silence. while the iraqi nation was impoverished, he continued to add to his collection of palaces and couldnt care less about anyone. sunnis, shias, kurds, christians, everyone was suffering under his evil rule. shias, kurds and even christians were masacred for who they were. only his loyalists lived normal lives, basically the ones that kissed his ass day and night. as for the ones that stood for their rights and justice, they were killed immediately or tortured in prison till they died.
ofcourse the surrounding arab countries have no idea and to them its 'saddam the hero', just because he threw them a few pennies! he helped build other countries while his own was in ruins. i hope god NEVER has mercy on him. to say that he is the devil is not enough. Finally the Iraqi's can leave in "peace" (they just have to kick the bad educated Americans from Iraq). Saddam deserves what he deserves.After his death he will have to face the real judgement in front of God.

I am an Iraqi, and my dad was almost sentence to death by Saddam Hussien, simply bcz my dad cursed Saddam publicly, I definitely do not come from a family that likes Saddam, since we never had anything good coming from him, however, my whole entire family feels that it is such a shame that he will be hung, it is bcz it is not just HIM,
if you want to apply the rule to everyone, then Milosovic should also die, and so many other Leaders, Americans or not, should be convicted of heinous crimes!
If this trial is not political and not sensational meaning before the american elections, and if this trial is fair from ALL perspectives, then I agree with it, especially that this sentencing came from a foreign intervention and NOT FROM IraqiS earned hardwork to Overthrow their regime!

I, as a kurd, am happy that Saddam is going to die finally. Because of the things he did not only to the kurds but to all iraqi people! I have heard a lot about the way people lived while he was the president and the picture didntt look good at all! But dont u think that hanging him will not be a punishment for him? Yes Saddam's was a theatrical ridiculous court case and unfortunately it will not be the last one. I think a life sentence would have been harder for Saddam to bear. Death to such a man is a blessing compared to the misery he feels without having control or power. He will always view himself as the president of Iraq.
I mean comeon a former Arab president sentenced to death because America wished so, it makes the blood boil. The American government turned a blind eye on his crimes against his people for years until its interests were threatened. Saddam whether u like it or not had/ has loyalists who have their freedom and will feel rage by this sentence. What will that bring? More death and more reason to feel that vengeance is the solution. You really do have to forget Saddam now and focus on the fact that it will boil over into the sha3b and cause more chaos and more civilian casualties & death. Wait until he is hung and u will see chaos in the country, u might be happy as a result of the hanging. But is it worth the aftermath of more citizens dying- I think not. Forget Saddam, focus on the mentality of the people there, those who ruled with him, those who were against him, Sunni’s, Shi3a- it's just another reason to make conflict. I don't really know how 2 explain but u should be smart enough to realize ino death does not solve anything, just causes more destruction to humanity...make the link. For every action there is a consequence and in this one it is huge and will only get bigger.
