Bush Accepts Comparison of Iraq to Vietnam

I thought he'd never say it, but now he finally has. President Bush -- the guy who has invaded 2 countries in 2 presidential terms-- has accepted that the surge in violence in Iraq may be equivalent to America's horrible experience in the Vietnam War.

Bush told ABC News that it could be right to compare Iraq's situation to the 1968 Tet offensive, which was considered to be a turning point in the conflict.
But, as usual, he denied that the rising number of Iraqi and US military deaths meant the Iraq campaign was failing.
So I guess in his opinion, he thinks it's succeeding.

October is on course to be one of the bloodiest months for US forces in Iraq as 11 US soldiers were killed yesterday alone.

It’s interesting to see how he can come to admit this after three and a half years of total bloodshed.

You have to remember that in the tet afencive the north got its butt kicked it was in the U.S. press that we lost public faith in the war and had to pull out. Then we had the killings of Polpot called the Killing feilds if you can remember that far back.

    Dear Andrew,

Forgive me, but I'm not old enough to have witnessed that war. But I do try and read as much as I can about it. I know that the TET offensive didn't succeed and yes, the VC did suffer a heavy death toll but it is considered a turning point as far as battlefield tactics go. I personally don’t see the comparison to Vietnam. As far as US death toll goes, yes, there is a similarity but still far behind. The setting is also totally different as Vietnam was a jungle and Iraq is a flat desert which ‘should’ make the invaders much more comfortable. The funding and support is also different as the VC were supplied with the latest technological weaponry from the USSR as for the Iraqi resistance, they (according to intelligence) use weapons they had previously cashed before the invasion in addition to the fact that Iraq is full of guns everywhere. Also, Vietnam was divided into North and South and the VC were united in their resistance of the US, in Iraq, however, the resistance is by no means united neither politically nor ethnically. The only similarity to Vietnam, in my opinion, is the division of the American people towards the war. And the feeling that it’s a useless and fruitless campaign that is draining money and soldiers.
This is only my opinion, I can’t be sure since I don’t live in the US. If you can add or amend my ideas please do so to keep me in the light.

    Cheers
