The Leader of the House of Commons in the UK, Jack Straw, made remarks that it would be better for social integration if Muslim women did not veil their faces.
He made these comments last week which have caused a large debate which is refusing to die down.
The row erupted after Straw said that he asked visitors to his office to remove their veils, saying they acted as "a visible statement of separation and difference".
But he defended Muslims' right to wear headscarves, hijabs, unlike the French government which banned them from state schools, provoking protests across the Islamic world.
So what’s the difference? If they’re allowed to wear hijab, then how could a face veil cause “separation and difference?”
But on the other hand, is the face veil a product of Islam or just a social tradition that many people see as extreme?
Wearing the hijab is not tradition, but it is recomanded to women by Islam. But they are free to do it or not!
i think wearing the hijab has to stop my kids are so scared when they see women wearing the hijab . iam not against the islam but religion should be in your heart its not of any ones business what religion you are people should dress normal.
When will these people stop oppressing Muslim women? They claim they respect Islam and simultaneously hurt Muslim women by forcing them to neglect the hijab!! Hasbi allah, allah ikoon fee 3oon al muslimat... :(
faysel, it is true that Muslim women are free to wear it or not but in the end huwa FARTH 3ala al muslimat. Muslim women HAVE to wear it sometime in their lives because it is an obligation from God. Just wanted to clarify that.. ;)
hen why are your children scared? It's just fabric not a bomb... ;)
i agree with him. remember, he is not talking about the normal headscarf, he's talking about the one that covers the face. i mean i myself wear a normal headscarf, but when i see women with niqabs/face masks or wateva theyr called, even i feel uneasy and intimidated. get rid off them theyr totally unnecessary. feel free 2 wear them in saudi or in other countries where its normal, but in europe/us its unacceptable.
btw its not the hijab hes saying u shouldnt wear its the full faced veil,
if hes gonna go as far as saying dont wear the hijab then he can pi** off,
and hen y are your children scared like foofoo said its just fabric
i agree with what he said, i mean its not in the koran that you have to cover your face, thats just tradional. soo for those that cover your face i think you going way over board, why cant u just be a normal muslim.
to those woman who cover there face go back where you came from where its acceptable, this is not an arabic world and we cant tell people what to do in there countries, simply if you dont agree with not wearing the face hijab than just go somewhere in the middle east.
Well, i really dont have A LOT of knowledge of the Muslim faith, but to me, if the person wants to wear, they should damn well be able to...i still think its a lil overboard..but whatever floats ur boat, u kno?

Well when you are talking to someone, you should be able to see the expressions on their face in order to communicate properly. The burqa does seem intimidating and an alien object to kids who are not used to it, especially at an age where kids are quick to pick up prejudices and are attuned to what is happening around them and what they see on TV. But as they say to each his own, but I do not like it especially when I see a man with his wife all covered up and his eyes are all over the place, checking every feminine thing that moves. However it does make sense that he covers his wife from the eyes of perverts like him.
Well the veil is not FARTH so I don't know how it came up or why people wear it... ;) I thought it was the hijab. But you have to admit there have been some problems with the hijab in Europe, most notably, France... ;)
I agree with jack straw..i am a muslim and i live in the uk. I believe that when u are talked to u must show the other person ur face. its a sign of respect, just as it is when u take ur sun glasses off to talk to someone or u take ur hat off. the nikab is not fard and we dont have to wear it..thats cultural..if anyone wants to wear it they can go to saudi. Allah made our faces so that we show them to people, not COMPLETELY blacken out..Allah does not accept this!! So when jack straw said no more nikab..i believe no muslim women should wear nikab in the uk because its a dangerous..no one will no who is under there in exams, travels, meetings, interviews. its just not on!! if u wana live in the uk..follow its rules to a limit..wear hijab but respect the country!!
Well, actually, yea, i do agree with SMS...it is repectful when u see someones face while talking to them...plus, sometimes when i dont exactly hear what they said, i read their lips, so i dont look like an idiot =/

good im glad.
hijab is wonderful, but face veils is just too much.. in the Quran it clearly stated that all is to be covered other than ur FACE and hands, (some say feet too). so y would we do that?
i personally think the niqab is totally uncalled for and unecessary, especially in western countries where is does more bad than good to Islam, gives us a bad name..
NOW for whoever said her kids are scared of women who wear hijab? :S r u serious or joking? are they scared of nuns too? its just a cloth on the head.. maybe a psychologist will be a good idea, think about it.
well when your living in a European country you have to respect their way of life or culture just like they do when they visit muslim countries.i agree that wearing a face veil is just too much but why should we muslims care what Straw says anyway, its not like what he says is going to change anything is it?a democratic nation is one where its people are not being discriminated because of their gender, relegion, and ethnicity.wearing a face veil is entirely upto the indivisual and one only has the right to object to it when it is threatening national security or someone in particular.thus leads me to say France isnt democratic like it is looked upon.those who arent muslims should respect muslims who choose to wear the hijab just like muslim countries respect those indivisuals who dont wear it(saudi arabia excluded).i wont say anything in straw's defence since he defended himself by saying something so ridiculous like "separation and difference”.im not hearing blind people saying that all the time.people like him should shut their traps and protest something with more strength to it.you dont need to see a person to understand what they say.a voice carries enough expression to influence what they say.it has become a hobby for those who arent muslims and have nothing to do with us to attack us like the "holy" pope.i cant believe he based what he said about our prophet on a quote derived from a long-dead byzantinian emperor who probably ended up massacaring thousands of muslims in his holy campaigns 'the crusades' .
wearing hijab is good for me and i wear it everyday, what ever i go somewhere. but people keep looking at me like they want to get a revenge, what a stuped americans.
i have alot of hijabs not veil, i came here when i was 12. in my country all of the women have to wear veil cause some men are jerks, they keep bothering women flirting and talk nasty stuff when their not wearing veil. agh i hate that. they also keep trying to touch a woman in the back when they shop or winking at them when their husbands are busy.
one of the guy he was behind the woman her husband is next to her. he was flirting at her, so she tell her husband, and then her huband took him up and thorw him in the floor. see thats why women in my country have to wear veil. but some the cities dont have to wear.
Where are you from 'me' ?
who gives a rats ass what straw thinks huh?its not like that man is going to change anything is he?hes just like the damned 'pope'.they interfere in things they have nothing to with.
"a visible statement of separation and difference".
what the hell is that supposed to mean? im not sure blind people go on about telling other people 'i cant see you so you are acting as a visible statement of separation and difference'.
fcuk off straw.youve got no strong argument.since when was freedom of speech all about preaching racism?
for all those muslims i advise you not to get too offended by a scumbag like him because what he does or says wont change a thing about the way we muslims are.
oh and 'theintellectual' i found your post really good and thats why i used the 'blind ' people example.sorry about that.
