Omaret Yacoubian in Berlin Festival

Omaret Yacoubian

The best selling novel Omaret Yacoubian (The Yacoubian Building) written by Ala’a El Aswani was transformed to a movie produced by “Good news group” company owned by Emad El Din Adib. The novel is very controversial as it is talking about Egypt before and after the revolution and the transformation that Egypt witnessed along these years. It tackles a lot of political and sexual issues in a very bold way. The movie was chosen with about another 20 movies to be in the Panorama in Berlin Festival which is considered a very important and prestigious cinema festival in the world.

It must be mentioned that this movie was chosen after “Alexandria…why” movie directed by Youssef Shahin which was chosen in Berlin Festival in 1979. There are negotiations now that the movie will be in Cannes Festival too. The movie will be in the cinemas the next summer and some of the actors who participated in it are Adel Imam, Youssra, Nour El Sherif…The scenario was written by Wahid Hamed and directed by his son Marwan Hamed. All the people who work in the cinema field are very optimistic about that movie which will cause a huge transformation in the cinema production that was controlled by comedies and commercial movies.

The novel is a bit filthy for my taste although it would make a pretty good liberal movie... expect a lot of controversy raised by Islamic clerics since it deals with prostituation, h o m o sexuality, political and radicalism issues

I actually haven't seen the movie and never heard about it before this article, but i think it's a good opportunity for our arab actors like Adel emam and Nour sherif to be known worldwide, if it's talking about Egypt then many people would know more about the country and therefore promoting tourism. I wish that the Arabic film industury will prosper more and more, we are so fed up with those commercial movies that have the beginning like the end. the arab world is somehow developing, and "ART" is the proof that shows how civilized and developed countries are.
