This year 2005, Eurovision Song Contest celebrates its 50th anniversary and it will be held in Ukraine and take place in the country's capital kyiv at Kyiv's Sports Palace.
The semifinal takes place on the 19th of May, the final on the 21st of May. Unfortunately Lebanon withdrew.
ya im the first to post here, anyway as you all know im lebanese and i cant believe lebanon withdrew from the contest...
What ?
Why did lebanon withdraw ?
by the way ... isnt the eurovision only for european countries ?
Oh yes Lebanon withdrew.
A big disappointment.
Lebanon was to be represented by Aline Lahoud who was scheduled to sing a French song (with an English version), written and composed by Jad Rahbani (None other than the brother of Star Academy's Oussama Rahbani) called "Quand Le Temps S'enfuit".
Aline, a beautiful and talended rising artist is the niece of famous playwright Romeo Lahoud and the daughter of singer Salwa Qatrib, and though her career is still budding she was awarded the Special Award Trophy of the FIDOF (Federation Internationale de l’Organisation des Festivals) during the Megahit Festival in Turkey in September 2004 as well as the ‘Murex d’Or’ trophy in Lebanon for the current year.
As for the reason of the withdrawal, well as usual, STUPID ARAB POLITICS.
The state Lebanese television TELE LIBAN, sponsoring Lahoud, should have listed the names of the participants on its website, abiding by the rules of the EUROVISION.
However, they insisted on not mentioning the oh-so dreaded name of Israel on the website which cost them to withdraw, because the respect of the EUROVISION Laws and regulations should be completely fulfilled and with no exceptions.
Such narrow-minded thinking will keep pulling us Lebanese backward I'm afraid . I think the Lebanese idiotic state (the remanant of the Syrian puppets) is being "More Catholic than the Pope", "Plus Royaliste que le Roi" ...
What great disaster would have ensued the mentioning of Israel's name on a stupid website that no one visits anyway?
The EUROVISION is an important song contest reserved for European nations, and the invitation for Lebanon this was finally a recognition from Europe of the westernized aspect of our country. Whether you like it or not both western and eastern culture coexist in Lebanon.
I think Aline would have been a perfect representative for our westernized talent, where we do not only sing along like parakeet but also compose and right lyrics in western languages, and it's too bad for us to miss this chance to be in the spotlights on the world scene!
i can't wait to watch the contest ... i do every year ...
cool !
To marcella:

IM GLAD LEBANON WITHDREW. INNO ITS CALLED EUROVISION SONG CONTEST NOT EURO AND LEBANESE VISION SONG CONTEST. WHAT A JOKE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN IF LEBANON WAS IN THE CONTEST AND SANG A SONG IN FRENCH. WILL THE SWEDISH SING IN FRENCH? WILL THE ITALIANS SING IN FRENCH? NOOOOOOO THEY WILL NOT... THEY ARE PROUD OF THEIR LANGUAGES AND THEY SHOULD BE... LIKE LEBANON SHOULD BE PROUD OF ITS LANGUAGE WHICH IS ARABIC, INNO ITS GREAT TO KNOW MORE THAN ONE LANGUAGE BUT ITS SAD WHEN YOU LET IT OVERTAKE YOU AND YOU CHOOSE IT ON YOUR OWN MOTHER TONGUE. IT WAS GREAT WHEN DIANA KARAZON SANG IN ARABIC IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE WORLD IN THE 2003 COMPETITION OF WORLD IDOL. I WAS SO PROUD OF HER AND WAS SO PROUD TO BE ARAB.
MAYBE ONE DAY WE WILL HAVE AN ARABVISION SONG CONTEST AND LEBANON WILL SING IN IT.
YALLA BONNE NUIT .
MOI HAS SPOKEN!!!!
P.S: IM NOT ANTI FRENCH. AS A MATTER OF FACT I LOVE THE FRENCH AND PRESIDENT CHIRAC... IM JUST ANTI PPL YALLEH BYESTE7O W BYONEKRO ASLOUN... YES THE FOOLS THAT STILL CONSIDER THEMSELVES PHOENICIANS.... WHAT A JOKE. INNO IF WE ALL DID THE SAME THEN I GUESS WE ARE ALL AFRICANS CAUSE IF IM NOT WRONG THE OLDEST EVER HUMAN REMAINS FOUND WERE IN AFRICA... OR WAS IT IRAK? I FORGOT! WHO CARES ANYWAY ITS JUST AN EXAMPLE TO SHOW SOMEONE HOW SILLY AND IDIOTIC THEY ARE. LEBANON IS AN ARABIC COUNTRY AND HAS BEEN FOR MANY MANY MANY MANY YEARS AND WILL STAY ARABIC FOREVER. W KHALAS BA2AAAAAAAAAAAAA !!!!
MOI HAS SPOKEN AND FINISHED!!!!
LoL HinDawDaw...shda3wa 3ad kint batarjimlaha..:)
Dear friends,
Please note that Jad Rahbani is Oussama Rahbani's cousin not his brother!
Try to learn a bit more about the great Lebanese composers. I am not a lebanese , not even an arab but I do appreciate a lot Oussama Rahbani's work.
I just listen to the song and as a musician which I am , I would say that it's wonderful. Its true that the song got french lirics but the music had oriental flavor. That's nice!
So bad Lebanon was not there in Kiev last night.
Music will remain the pasport to the world and the language of peace.
yes, greece won, that song was amaizing, Elena , the singer was also amazing, she is the best!!!
i think this was a great contest.
My best friend is greek and so i had heard the song before but even then i knew it would be a finalist.
Lebanon may not be in europe but it is as much european as all the other cultures, it is a shame and an embarresment to the rest of the world that we were withdrawn for this reason.
By the way MOI, most of the countries sang in a different language than their own, a majority sang in english and french, mostly because it is a world language and people from all over the world were watching, and not because they are not proud of their language.
I am from Australia and we were so glad to hear the songs in a language that we could all understand.

The swedish sang this year and the last year in english not on swedish, so not everybody sing on their own languages, its a pity, but what had happened if lebanon participate, it had been very nice to an arabic country to sing in the euro vision contest!!!
By a lebanese who lives in sweden!
yaaah Greece won!!! Elena Paparizou is the best, i like her better as a solo artist then when she was with Antique. not sayin antique wasnt good i just like paparizou better on her own =) and xristos dantis and natalia germanou wrote an awsome song for her! =D yay go greece!!
