I find this subject interesting !!!
In many (if not most) animal species it is the MALE that tries to attract the female, not the other way around. Male non-human animals are brightly colored to attract females, fight each other for the female attention, and do the bizarre dances to prove their fitness. For this reason I think there must be other reasons why human women strive for the beauty; we are animals too after all and should theoretically follow other animal behavior.
My guess is that women strive to be beautiful because, despite the social advancements, women are still taught to feel unequal to men, or at least at a disadvantage :"Women are the ones who sacrifice their careers to rear children. Women are not as competent as men in certain intellect pursuits. Women are not as physically robust".
Female non-human animals don't have these social ideas to contend with and don't feel "inadequate." So it is my uneducated guess that beauty is the ideal striven for by women as a form of compensation. Because society has taught women they are not as intelligent, useful, or strong, women strive for beauty instead. I don't think women are trying to attract men; they are trying to equal them by overcompensating with curlers, make-up, and wax!! which is really avery bad attitude...
Actually, in our country we dont hav this problem at all!! Women are really appreciated for their brains!! That's why we hav in our country very simple women, not fake but very competent even more that men!!!

I am disgusted when I hear men appreciating women just for their beauty...Even in all religion "who understands really the religion" God appreciated women in all aspects. Women fought hard to be appreciated, to not be limited to how they look or to just cook and raise the kids.
Im most couples the wife takes care 80% of the house duties..when I say duty I talk about kids, managing the money, and even participating to the house income, while the man just work outside...!! Is it really fair? No....
Some women that are not successful at school and beautiful use their beauty to get where they want and that's a small percentage. In 2005 We have women writers, scientists, politicians,...etc that are beautiful but very smart.
When a man has a woman with the complete package, meaning beautiful, smart, and educated he gets scared, it's a threat for him...so he tries to step on her ...I've seen it and mostly with Arabs...they feel inferior somehow...
