It's happened again to England football team - failure in the cruellest way at a major tournament. However David Beckham angrily defended his role as England captain, after he missed a penalty when his side tumbled out of the European Championship in a shootout loss to Portugal.

David Beckham said: "I won't be resigning unless someone wants me to, and that will be the manager (Sven-Goran Eriksson). I believe this team can go far."

It was Beckham's third penalty miss in a row. He also had a penalty saved in England's 2-1 injury time loss to France in its opening Euro 2004 match on June 13 and slipped and kicked a penalty over the bar in England's 0-0 final qualifying match draw in Turkey.
